The castle gardens of Willibaldsburg near Eichstätt were one of Europe’s most beautiful public gardens in the 17th century and are now open to visitors once again. Their rare, exotic plants were exhibited in this book by Basilius Besler, a pharmacist in Nuremberg, on behalf of the lord of the castle, Prince Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen.
»Hortus Eystettensis«, which appeared in 1613 in large folio, depicts almost 1.100 plants on 367 copperplates, mostly in their natural size.
This work, with its true to nature, coloured portrayals and lavishly arranged titles and subtitles, ushered in the age of copperplate engraving in Germany.
